Arijit Mitra is a Consultant Ophthalmogist at BMEC, with subspecialty interest in Surgical and Medical Retina.He graduated from and completed basic surgical training in Ophthalmology from Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital, in India. He undertook higher specialist training in Ophthalmology at West Midlands School of Ophthalmology. He underwent further specialist training in the management of complex vitreo-retinal disorders at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital.
He has won several prizes during his training at the West Midlands Deanery. He has published over 35 papers in peer-reviewed journals and has presented widely at national and international meetings.
Together with his colleagues, he has been successfully running simulation courses since 2016.
He was the first Simulation Lead for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.
Having qualified from Sheffield in 1993, Samer Elsherbiny trained in general surgery, general medicine, accident and emergency and neurology before starting his training in ophthalmology. Having trained in Glasgow and Leeds, he then joined the specialist registrar rotation in the West Midlands and in 2004 was appointed Consultant in the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre, with a specialist interest in retinal diseases. Despite this specialist interest, he also continues to oversee a large volume of general adult ophthalmology and is responsible for approximately ten thousand patient episodes annually.
He has co-authored numerous publications and has many areas of interest within ophthalmic practice, the most prominent of which is workforce development and education and training. In July 2016, he was awarded the Masters in Medical Education from the University of Birmingham. After holding a number of administrative roles within BMEC, he has spent more time recently as examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and invited examiner overseas. He is now focusing on collaborative education and training programs in developing countries. His external duties include being ophthalmology advisor to the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman.
Since April 2007, he has been running a number of different courses including one of a handful Ophthalmic laser simulation courses in the UK. He teamed up with like-minded colleagues to offer a blueprint of teaching ophthalmic laser as presented in the Congress of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in 2014.
